Cataracts, age, and health

As our bodies age, proteins develop within the lens of the eye. This contributes to the decreased flexibility of the lens and more difficulty seeing up close. Our lenses also become cloudier as proteins accumulate, and the cloudy lens is called a cataract.

Cataracts not only develop from age, but also from certain medical conditions such as diabetes, prior ocular trauma, or medications. A comprehensive Puget Sound Vision Ocular Analysis (PSVOA) will be able to determine whether you have cataracts and if they are impacting your vision.

Treatments for Cataracts

Cataracts, after they have developed, are an irreversible. The only treatment is surgery, where the cloudy lens is removed and replaced by a new lens. This procedure typically only takes 15 minutes, and most people note improvement in their vision within a few days.
